About WorldView-3

WorldView-3 (WV3) will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 617km, allowing it to capture imagery at a resolution of 31cm. Following the newest resolution relaxation ruling from the Department of Commerce earlier this month which allows commercial sale of 25 cm resolution imagery, WV-3’s orbiting elevation may be revised to allow the sensor to capture imagery at this higher resolution. With a swath width of 13.1km, WorldView-3 will have the ability to capture up to 680,000sqkm of imagery every day.

An exciting new technology, Control Moment Gyroscopes or CMGs, has been developed specifically for WV-3 by Ball Aerospace.  The CGMs will be able to reorient the satellite over a chosen location in as little as 4-5 seconds; much faster than the 30-45 seconds needed for traditional reaction wheels.
