Sample
Project Experience
eMap
International was contracted by the NOAA Center for Coastal Fisheries
and Habitats to provide high-resolution, georectified 4-m resolution
IKONOS multispectral satellite imagery for the Coast of Buford, North
Carolina. The newly collected IKONOS imagery was used for aquatic
vegetation mapping, with specific interest in mapping sea grass. The
client requested a new image acquisition under very demanding and
exacting collection parameters. Image collection involved a relatively
short tasking window with precise look angles, sun angles and satellite
attitude and azimuth parameters to avoid sun glint on water and to
insure maximum water penetration. Weather, tide conditions and amount of
clouds in the project area presented additional challenges. Tasking was
completed efficiently, met all collection parameters and the final
product was generated and delivered within days of image collection. The
data and schedule exceeded the client’s expectations for this project.
City of Durham, NC – Impervious
Surface Map (ISM™) Product & Custom Orthoimagery
Approximate Size: 103 square miles
eMap International produced an Impervious
Surface Map (ISM™) for the City of Durham, NC (94 square miles) in 2005 and an
ISM™ update (103 square miles) in 2006 and 2007. Impervious surfaces were
quantified for each of the approximately 70,000 water and sewer
customers in square feet and percent per parcel. Parcels included
residential at different densities, commercial, industrial and other landuses. Deliverables included the 1”=400’ 4-band multispectral (blue,
green, red, infrared) orthoimage of Durham (produced using rigorous
photogrammetric methods); and the impervious surface map (binary raster
GeoTiff and ESRI shapefile) with associated attribute table containing
the amount of impervious surfaces for each parcel in square feet and the
percentage of impervious surfaces contained within a parcel. The
attributes were also included in an Excel spreadsheet. Final ISM™
product accuracy was greater than 90% (97% in 2006 and 2007). This
repeat business and continuing updates planned for the future via a
subscription program demonstrates and validates both the quality and
usefulness of the ISM™ product.
In
2007, the high-resolution satellite, QuickBird, was programmed for a new
collection during the late-winter and early-spring leaf-off months.
Cloud-free data was obtained over the entire County of Durham and was
subsequently orthorectified by registering the data to a
customer-provided land base layer.
Jeff Liedtke performed as project manager for both
projects to ensure the delivered impervious surface map met both
standard product specifications, customer expectations and that the ISM™
product was delivered on time and within budget. Dr. Kumar Navulur
applied eMap’s proprietary classification algorithms to extract
impervious surfaces for both projects. David Nale, eMap President, acted
as Principal in Charge for both projects. Brock McCarty, eMap Sales
Manager, acted as project manager for the collection and production of
the custom orthoimagery.
Independent Quality Review of
Geospatial Data
eMap International was awarded a contract by Hamilton County, Indiana,
to provide independent quality review for the County’s recently acquired
2007 digital orthophotography, topography and planimetrics data.
eMap International was contracted to provide a through quality review
for 434 square miles of 6-inch resolution, digital natural color
orthoimagery, topographic DTM, and updated planimetrics layers
including; edge of pavement, buildings, and hydrographic features. The
Quality Control Review was completed within 30 days of the delivery of
the data. Larry Stout, GIS Manager with Hamilton County stated, "In the
past, we have done the QC in-house and it has taken a year or more to
complete because we had to fit it in with our normal workload."
