The Area of Interest
Midan Al-Tahrir Square; Cair, Egypt

Midan Al-Tahrir, or more popularly known as Tahrir Square or Liberation Square, has become a central focus in Egypt's historical quest for democracy through peaceful revolution. The events taking place across the Mid-East and Africa started in Tunisia with the martyring of a fruit dealer. The revolutionary energy soon spread to Egypt where millions of oppressed Egyptians took to the streets of Tahrir Square to show their frustration with the dictatorial regime and to state their desire for a democratic nation.

The Roll of Satellite Imagery in Disaster Management

Satellite imagery helps us to better understand and follow the horrific tragedy that is unfolding in Japan. From a space-born prospective, yet offering better than 2-foot resolution, the imagery provides an accurate measure of the extent of devastation and a very cost effective and timely tool to monitor the clean-up going forward. The imagery also provides a temporal record precisely documenting the geospatial state of ground features on any given date.

The New York Times published some of the first images captured by DigitalGlobe and GeoEye shortly after the quake and subsequent tsunami. Click here to read the article.

Even to the untrained eye the value of this imagery becomes immediately evident.

In the days, weeks, months and years ahead, given clear skies, it’s almost a sure bet that high-resolution satellites will be aimed every morning on northeastern Japan. Over time I’m confident that these satellite images will once again record the resilience and perseverance to rebuild that the Japanese people have aptly demonstrated in the past.
