Geospatial Freebie(s) of the Month – Louisiana and Texas Elevation Data

High-quality elevation data is an important input for many geospatial projects but locating free sources of this information can be challenging especially when you need resolution that exceeds the 30-meter and 90-meter free SRTM DEM resolutions. For this Freebie of the Month, we have found several sources of elevation data in key oil and gas basins that we would like to share with you.

The first is the LSU Atlas LIDAR Downloader which contains a near complete LiDAR dataset for the state of Louisiana. Various formats are offered on this site including a finished DEM and contour layer; raw and edited LiDAR points; and breakline details.

The second is the Texas Natural Resources Information System which has 5-meter and 10-meter DEMs for a large portion of the state. LiDAR data can also be purchased for the reasonable cost of $250 per county.
